3 bullets from cops failed By Garry Cabotaje Sun.Star Staff Reporter
POLICE shot three times the man who attacked his brother-in-law’s family in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, particularly when he took hostage and stabbed a five-year-old child, but he killed himself before investigators could ask why he did what he did.
The eight-year-old boy who was seriously wounded in last Tuesday’s attack by his uncle has been transferred to a recovery room of the city’s local hospital.
But Supt. Constantino Barot, Dumaguete City Police Station chief, said the boy’s father remained in the intensive care unit because of multiple stab wounds.
The father and son were among the victims when a depressed brother-in-law went on a stabbing spree last Tuesday dawn.
The suspect, finally identified as Ronnie Catones Yusores, 30, also killed himself after he stabbed dead his sister-in-law and three children.
Satanic cult
Barot, however, denied that Yusores was a member of a Satanic cult. He maintained that Yusores got depressed after his wife left him over a domestic quarrel.
In full view of responding policemen, Yusores took his own life by stabbing his neck with a kitchen knife, despite the gunshot wounds in his body, said Barot.
Five-year-old Germilo Burdas and his two brothers, Michael, 18 and Ariel, 15, died from multiple stab wounds on the way to the Holy Child Hospital.
Clutching the bloodied Germilo, Yusores rushed back to the victims’ house in Purok 5, Upper Batinguel, Dumaguete City, after seeing five policemen outside.
Yusores, a resident of Sitio Sandayong, Barangay Giligaon, Siaton, Negros Oriental, then stabbed Germilo several times, forcing lawmen to shoot him thrice.
The incident happened hours after Yusores asked the Burdas family that he be allowed to sleep overnight last Monday.
He reportedly sought the help of his brother-in-law, Marino Burdas Sr., the victims’ father, to take back his wife, who returned to her hometown in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental.
Yusores reportedly got depressed after his wife Bebie, Marino’s sister, left him.
Aside from the children, Yusores also stabbed dead Marino’s 50-year-old wife Egliceria. He also beheaded the woman and slashed one of her breasts.
Using the same kitchen knife, Yusores also attacked Marino and another boy, Marino Burdas Jr., eight.
As of yesterday, Barot said Marino Jr. was already transferred to a recovery room of Holy Child Hospital.
