Man accused of trying to kidnap mall date

A WOMAN claimed that her date tried to kidnap and rape her in his car last Monday afternoon in Barangay San Roque, Liloan, Cebu.

Hearing her shout for help, a group of habal-habal drivers in Barangay Garing, Consolacion town pursued the vehicle, which later fell off a ravine.

Teresa V. Saso, however, survived and was rescued by the drivers while suspect Rogelio Matugas, 34, from Danao City escaped.

She met Matugas at a mall at the Cebu City North Reclamation area supposedly for a date, but to her surprise, he forced her into his Toyota Tamaraw car and tied her hands. The suspect then drove her north.

SPO2 Ricardo Ermac of Liloan police said they received a radio message from Consolacion police at 3:55 p.m. asking them to set up a checkpoint and watch for a yellow Toyota Tamaraw. A concerned citizen reportedly called the latter about the alleged kidnapping.

The checkpoint, however, proved futile as the suspect digressed to a road leading to hinterland Barangay Garing in Consolacion from the national highway, where police headquarters of Consolacion and Liloan towns are. The stations were only a few meters away from each other.

The police have yet to meet Saso as they only got their reports from the habal-habal drivers, who reportedly brought Saso to the hospital for check-up. Ando Bertulfo of Superbalita
