By Patrick C. Costelo

TWO colossal rivals are revved and ready to face off as the 2003 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) football tournament kicks off tomorrow at the Silliman Ballfield in Dumaguete City.

Defending champion and six-time champs Cebu City, made up of core team Abellana National School and a some recruits from University of Southern Philippines, Don Bosco Technology Center and University of San Jose-Recoletos, is the top contender in Bracket A, made up of Negros Oriental and Lapu-Lapu City.

On the other hand, representing Cebu Province for the fourth consecutive time is Carmen National High School, which heads Bracket A along with host Dumaguete City and Bohol.

While in the Elementary division, the Mario Ceniza-mentored Paref-Springdale representing Cebu City for the first time, will face tough competition against powerhouse Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City and Bohol in the four-team, single round-robin clash.

Six Cebu City booters, who were part of last year’s squad that beat Cebu Province (1-0) in the finals, are on the current line-up, led by national player Fred Salazar on goal. Epifanio Ynot, DBTC’s Justin Tan and USP’s John Gacayan, Julius Acre and Val Ragasajo are the five other carryovers.

“We’re the defending champs. The boys are aching to hit the field,” said Team Cebu City coach Francis Ramirez.
