Chiongbian: Clifford’s smoke gets in your eyes
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Tee time

Last week, Cebu Country Club (CCC) hosted a victory dinner to celebrate the three-peat first place win of the Men’s regular team and the second runner-up win of the Senior’s team at the PAL Inter-club tournament. During the dinner, the Men’s team showed a candid video of their players while in Davao that was very humorous and reflected their young age. The Senior’s team, however, was less animated and contented with only still photos to show for their visit.

SMOKING ROOM. My most humorous memory of our trip was of teammate Clifford Celdran. Since he smokes, he had serious problems with the smoke-free ordinance of Davao City. He was jumpy and constantly looking for a place to smoke. But not to worry, The Venue, where the awarding was held, had a smoking room made of glass so you can see through and not miss a thing. From the outside (still indoors), the smoking room looks like an aquarium (or the penalty box of ice hockey) and quite amusing to watch as the smokers trade smokes inside.

Since our table was right next to the smoking room, Clifford was totally delighted with the convenience of going in and out of the room. However, when he was sitting with us and someone left the door ajar, it would upset him so much that he got up and closed it time after time. So I asked him, why he did that. He replied that the smoke from the room really stinks and it bothered him. But I said, when you are in there, doesn’t it bother you then? He said no, because it was not as bad inside as it was outside. I almost cried laughing.

In all fairness to Cliff, studies have proven that second-hand smoke is more hazardous than first-hand smoke. So he is very correct about his opinion. But can it be true that you don’t inhale second-hand smoke while you are smoking? Heaven can’t wait to give you that answer.

After the PAL tournament, it is a signal that the start of the Club Championships will soon begin. So get ready and polish your swing and practice, practice, practice.

But first the Presidents Cup at CCC, which will be held on March 22-23. It is a two-man team with different formats for each day of competition. The teams compete in a best ball scramble on the first day and aggregate scoring on the second day. The players will be divided into flights or divisions based on the first day scores.

This style of competition was developed last year to give the members a new way to enjoy a two-day tournament. Even with a bad score on the first day, a team can make it to the top of their division as the teams get divided into flights. Making the next day a new day with everyone still in the hunt for prizes.

Speaking of tournaments, what would be nice is to have an inter-club tournament of all Cebu golf clubs. The winner can be called Club Champion of Cebu. The format is already in place since all the clubs have their individual club championship and can use their top eight qualifiers in all divisions to enter. This will give new meaning to Club Championships in Cebu. Venue can be on rotation basis similar to PAL. Hope you organizers are listening.

GOLF TIP: The basic idea for a good posture is to bend moderately at the waist and knees, head up, a straight back (not stiff), and the weight centered on the balls of your feet. The posture can be changed from this neutral position to improve your shots.

If you slice, stand more upright at address to give you a shallower angle and a more inside to out swing path to reduce slicing. Additional correction can be made, by placing more weight (70 percent) over your right foot at address.

If you hook, bend more from the waist (not knees), which will steepen your clubhead path and keeps it moving straight along the target line longer. This will reduce the tendency to come from inside the target line and hit a hook.

At address, keep your weight evenly distributed between your feet to minimize an inside to out path.
