Dazz does it By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
DAZZ Dishwashing Liquid finally ended a long wait for a regular championship after sweeping Cebuana Lhuillier Pawnbrokers in their best-of-three championship series at the Marcelo A. Barba Sports Complex in Toledo City.
The Greasebusters copped the CBF 2003 McDonald’s President’s Cup as they stormed the unsuspecting Pawnbrokers in the final quarter to pull a 91-84 victory in Game 2.
While General Feeds Mega Mix copped the third-place trophy after dislodging Skygo Motorcycle in an equally thrilling 88-82 victory to sweep the series.
Dazz came up with huge fourth-quarter game to win the championship denied them last year by the General Milling Corp. franchise. The spectacular games displayed by Reed Friar Juntilla, Niel Rañeses and Patrick Benedicto plus the huge support provided by Dazz bench paved the way in plucking their first regular championship title after winning the Carmen Mayor’s Cup tilt last year.
It was also a sweet victory for the Jun Noel-mentored Dazz which was denied entry to the championship round in the Commissioner’s Cup after being upset by the Casino Ethyl Alcohol.
Dazz dominated the proceedings in the first half as it protected a slim lead to keep the Pawnbrokers at bay. However, Rex Salvaña was able to come up excellent game plan in the third period, using the hassle of Jojo Maglasang and the dominating inside game of Braulio Lim to take the lead, 62-61, at the start of the final 10 minutes.
Noel quickly reacted to Salvaña’s game pattern as he used his patented run- and-gun weapon to wipe out any resistance from the Pawnbrokers.
Juntilla was responsible for the uprising as he dropped seven of his game- high 31 points in the final period with Rañeses and Ferdinand Daa controlling the boards for Dazz.
With Juntilla sinking baskets both inside and outside, Benedicto also announced his presence with his long bombs giving Cebuana Lhuillier’s defense even tougher time to contend the opponents.
Maglasang topped the runner-ups with 21 points, Lim added 18 and Juvannile Yu contributed 15.
Meanwhile, General Feeds Mega Mix banked on another splendid game of Jett Latonio and the outside bombs of Alex Cainglet to take away the fight from the Riders.
Skygo’s scoring was led by Jayford Rodriguez, who finished with 17 points and Joseph Ronald Quiñahan with 15 markers.
