Micame: John-john should heed Sonny’s advice
By Rel P. Micame

FATHER’S ADVICE. Vice Gov. John Gregory “John-john” Osmeña should heed the advice of his father, Sen. John “Sonny”, not to run for governor in the forthcoming 2004 election. The young Osmeña should seek instead a congressional seat representing Cebu’s sixth district for political survival. The Cebuano opposition senator said he will work to persuade incumbent sixth district Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz to run for Mandaue city mayor and create one congressional district for Mactan Island. With this assurance, will this mean that Sonny will also work for the enactment of Ruiz’s bill creating a seventh district covering Mandaue City and Consolacion town?

VETERAN. John-john should listen to his father who is a veteran politician, undefeated in his political career during the last 40 years. He should run for congressman instead of governor because as what Sonny said, “I believe that the survival of a person in a life-long political career is in legislation. Political longevity is in legislature, not in the executive.”

“But, if my son insists on running for governor, I suggest that he should get another running mate. I might support him, but not Gwen,” the Cebuano senator added, referring to Gov. Pablo Garcia’s daughter Gwen-dolyn.

LITO-GREG TANDEM. As the 2004 election approaches, a new provincial team in Cebu has emerged. A source close to this corner disclosed that former governor Emilio “Lito” Osmeña will team up with Provincial Board (PB) Member Gregorio “Greg” Sanchez as standard bearers of the Probinsiya Muna Development Initiative (Promdi) in Cebu. Promdi, whose national chairman is Lito Osmeña, is a member of the ruling coalition. Osmeña, who is President Arroyo’s economic adviser, has the financial resources.

Sonny will be happy with this new political development because, my source said, John-john will give way to his uncle Lito for the governorship. The young Osmeña, who is reportedly establishing his residence in Carcar, will run instead for congressman in Cebu’s first district.

My source also told me that former mayor Achilles Canete is planning to retake the mayorship of Liloan or run for board member representing the fifth district..

The Lito Osmeña-Greg Sanchez tandem is expected to trigger a realignment of political forces in Cebu. The board members allied with John-john will take shelter under the new political tandem.

FED UP. Cebu City Mayor Tomas Os-meña must have already been fed up with the mismanagement of the Ba-gong Buhay Rehabilitation Center (BBRC) by Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officials. The city mayor must also be tired of hearing reports on jail personnel’s money-making activities at the BBRC.

Osmeña attributed the frequent occurrence of jail breaks to the laxity of jail guards in the performance of their duties. Mayor Osmeña will bring to the attention of President Arroyo the poor management at the BBRC. These are the reasons why the Cebu City mayor put his thumbs down on the transfer of inmates from the BBRC in Lahug to the new facility at Barangay Kalu-nasan unless the present jail officials and guards are replaced.

The mayor is apprehensive that if he allows the transfer of inmates to the Kalunasan facility now, the lives of residents at the Beverly Hills will be placed at risk in case of jail breaks. The posh subdivision, where Cebu City millionaires reside, is very near the Kalu-nasan facility, and in the event of jail breaks, the escapees might get into the houses of the millionaires and take hostage the husband, wife or children. What a catastrophe!

SCRIPTURE READING. Suggested reading of the Holy Bible for today is found in the Gospel according to St. Mark 12:28-34 “The great commandment,” and for Mar. 29—St. Luke 8:9-14 “The purpose of the parables.
