RP still Sars-free, DOH assures Glo
By Linette C. Ramos

DEPARTMENT of Health (DOH) Secretary Manuel Dayrit assured President Arroyo and the public that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) has not reached the country yet, as the number of confirmed cases reached 1,323 in 14 countries.

During a teleconference with the President yesterday, Dayrit also assured Cebu Gov. Pablo Garcia that quarantine procedures have been intensified in the country’s seaports and airports to ensure that the disease does not reach the country.

Even if contamination in Hong Kong and China continues to increase, DOH and the Department of Affairs (DFA) will not issue a travel ban to the countries where confirmed cases of Sars are recorded.

Sars has an incubation period of two to seven days, which could mean that infected persons do not suffer the symptoms immediately after the disease is acquired.

Its symptoms include rapid onset of fever and cough and after five days, respiratory symptoms due to pneumonia will develop.
