Sisos, Querubin, Dumoran win in netfest finals
By Jade S. Violeta

BERNADINE Siso, Cebu City’s junior tennis star, continued his rise towards fame and glory after he and fellow Cebuanos bagged titles in the Headpenn Tennis National Age-Group Tournament in Dumaguete City.

The RP 10-under Unisex division No.1 player, Siso, son of Sun.Star SuperBalita reporter Dino Siso, along with his sister Sally Mae and fellow Sancase Tennis Training Pool members Jin Querubin and Oswaldo Dumoran Jr., netted between them four championships in different age divisions after toppling separate rivals yesterday.

Fresh from a successful campaign in the recent Milo Tennis Tournament in Ormoc, Leyte, Siso of the University of San Carlos, wasted no time in stamping his class over his foe, Dumaguete City’s Prowell Sabanal, in the two age-group championship matches they played.

Siso’s first diadem in the tournament came in the 12-Under Boys division after he blanked Sabanal in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Siso, who is sponsored by Alibor, duplicated his mastery over the hapless Sabanal after he tallied an identical 6-0, 6-0 victory over the latter in the Boys 14-Under division for his second crown.

His younger sibling, Sally Mae, on the other hand, doled out another honor for the Cebu City team after she crushed Dumaguete City’s Claire Vespiras, 6-1, 6-0, in their championship-round encounter in the Girls 12-Under division.

Cebu’s fourth title for the day was taken by University of San Jose-Recoletos bet, Jin Querubin, who demolished another player from host Dumaguete, Mary Solon, 6-2, 6-0, to snare the Girls 14-Under division plum.

University of Visayas’ Dumoran plucked his own title in the event after dominating the Boys 16-Under category by edging out Carl Fernandez in the final round, 6-1, 6-2.

Cebu City has another chance to take home one more crown if Janji Soquiño, who was still fighting in the championship round in Boys 18-Under at press time, could overcome his foe.
