Super typhoon threatens to hit Cebu this week
By Lorenzo P. Niñal/Mia E. Abellana

CAPITOL is advising the public to prepare for a “super” typhoon to hit some areas in Eastern Visayas this week.

Typhoon Kujira, with maximum winds at 240 kilometers per hour, was spotted in the Samar area yesterday. Although it is traveling towards areas in Catanduanes and Aurora, authorities won’t take chances.

After receiving the advisory yesterday, Gov. Pablo Garcia sent orders for all Capitol offices related to disaster and relief operations to be on standby during the holidays.

He also sent orders for some offices to have a “skeletal force” at the Capitol today. A Malacañang proclamation allows the public sector not to report to work today, in observance of the Holy Week.

Expected to be open today are the offices of the treasurer, the assessor, the environmental and natural resources and social welfare.

Security at the Cebu South Bus Terminal will also be tightened starting today until the weekend.

Garcia said he has requested the PNP to send more men to the area, one of the places that usually teem with petty criminals during holidays.

Blue guards have already been assigned at the terminal long before Holy Week to provide more order in the facility.

Garcia said he will coordinate with other concerned government agencies on transport operations in the Province, especially on the possible unauthorized increase in fare.

Garcia is off to the Holy Family Retreat House tomorrow for his annual three-day Lenten recollection. But he said he would cut it short if any eventuality requires his immediate attention.
