CCPO chief vows to curb gambling
By Charmaine Y. Rodriguez

NEWLY designated Cebu City Police Office Director Cecil Ezra Sandalo promised Mayor Tomas Osmeña to curb illegal gambling activities in the city.

Sandalo yesterday said he will discuss with Police Regional Office 7 Director Roberto Delfin the possible transfer of Carbon Police Station’s four top officers.

“Supt. Manuel Gurtiza, Insp. Benjamin Salvatierra, Insp. Abraham Ocampo and Insp. Edwin Abuton will be transferred outside Cebu City. That is the desire of the mayor,” Sandalo told reporters after he paid Osmeña a courtesy call at City Hall yesterday.

The Carbon Police Station officials allegedly connived with illegal gambling operators in the area.

However, Sandalo said the issue on the fund-raising for his welcome party was not brought up during their discussion that lasted for over 30 minutes.

Enough

Osmeña, in his press conference, said he has said enough about the matter.
“I don’t want to waste time dealing with that issue to death. I’ve already set the tone. I don’t think it’s worthwhile pursuing,” he added.

Osmeña earlier warned Sandalo against lying on the matter and said it would cost him his post.

Apart from getting Sandalo’s assurance to stop video carrera operations in the city, the two officials also discussed improving the “patrolling” system using the City Government multicabs and the deployment of more policemen in the streets.

Osmeña, for his part, vowed that as “new rules of the game,” top officials in the stations will be “kicked out” if they fail to stop the proliferation of video carrera in their areas of responsibility.

Study

Although there will be no revamp, Sandalo said he will “reassess” the deployment of personnel and streamline the staff in the headquarters to beef up personnel in the police stations and foot patrol.

“We don’t need a big staff. We’ll do out best (to increase foot patrol personnel). (But) we have to study this. We don’t have to react automatically,” he said.
