Fire razes basket factory
By Aledel A. Gonzales

SOME P400,000 in property and finished products were razed in a fire that hit a basket factory in Mandaue City yesterday noon.

Mandaue City firefighters rushed to the compound of Highlight Metal Craft along M.H. del Pilar St. in Barangay Guizo, where the offices of sister companies Erlind’s Handicraft and Micro Light Basket were eaten up by flames.

The compound is across Manpark Cemetery.

Houses spared

No residential structures were affected, but it prompted Mandaue City Councilor Carlo Pontico Fortuna to leave a ceremony in City Hall and go home immediately because his house is only a few meters away from the factory.

An employee of Erlind’s Handicraft said that a wall fan fell on the baskets that were soaked in varnish.

Sparks and flammable materials contributed to the accident.

The Mandaue City Fire Department received the alarm at 11:35 a.m. and put the fire under control in 30 minutes.

Not burned

Fire investigator Roy Garcia said the office of Erlind’s Handicraft was spared because it was a good distance away from the production area and the office of Highlight Metal Craft.

Garcia said that when the fire trucks arrived at the scene, the flames were already big.

The incident was raised to second alarm considering that the fire was a result of light materials and flammable substances.

Erlinda Fuentes, owner of Erlind’s Handicraft suffered a minor injury in her nose when she bumped into one of the foundations of the building.
