Worker found dead in Lapu
By Oscar C. Pineda

A CONSTRUCTION worker was believed to have died of “bangungot” inside a construction site bunkhouse in Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

PNP medico-legal officer Jesus Cerna said bangungot, scientifically known as haemorrhagic pancreatitis, is caused by the bleeding of the pancreas caused by pressure exerted on it.

Homicide Chief Geoffrey Baguio narrated that coworkers at the construction site found Anthony Baron Menguito, 19, already lifeless on his bed at 5:30 a.m.

Coworkers immediately called police.

The victim’s family was also convinced that Menguito died of natural causes and saw no need to have the body examined.

Baring Barangay Captain Paulina, whose husband Luciano owns the construction site, said Mengui-to’s family brought his body yesterday morning to Ba-rangay Sabang in Olango Island.

The parents came all the way from the island to visit their son as he was complaining earlier of pain in the hands.

The parents told Baguio that their son complained about the pain when he went home last weekend.

Early Monday morning, despite the parents’ request for him to rest, the son left for work to Barangay Mactan as his hands were no longer bothering him.

The parents said, though, that they believe their son’s complaint had nothing to do with his death.

Cerna said extreme pressure exerted on the pancreatic duct causes it to rupture, thereby causing the corrosive pancreatic juice to spread and damage the nearby organs.

The pressure may be due to a full stomach, which is slightly above the pancreas.

He said severe bleeding follows a ruptured pancreatic duct.

According to Cerna, middle-aged Asians, mostly male, are prone to bangungot.
