Cviraa will not join Palaro
By Christian Ben Rodriguez

CENTRAL Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) has withdrawn its participation in the Palarong Pambansa 2003, which will be held in Tubod, Lanao del Norte on May 18.

Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Director Carolino Mordeno told Sun.Star yesterday he has issued a memorandum yesterday informing all coaches and athletes of the region’s withdrawal from the Palaro.

Mordeno said the athletes and coaches who are willing to go to Tubod make up barely 10 percent of the entire delegation. It is therefore useless for CV to join the event, he added.

He also disclosed that all superintendents of DepEd 7 have withdrawn support for the region’s participation after the Local Government Units also declined to join fearing the volatile situation in the venue.

“Parents, superintendents and the LGUs will not send the kids to the Palaro, that is why we will just withdraw this year and hope to participate next year,” Mordeno said. “We cannot form a (competitive) delegation, and with less than 10 percent of the athletes joining, it is useless to go there.”

Mordeno also said he has received unconfirmed reports that teams in Luzon will also withdraw from the Palaro together with the rest of the Visayas delegation.
