Defending champ wins; locals ousted

DEFENDING champion Johnny Arcilla led the semifinalists of the 3rd Mandaue City Men’s National Tennis Open after handily securing his quarterfinal match yesterday at the Mantads tennis courts.

Arcilla fixed his sights on the overall championship of the P100,000 tournament after eliminating sixth-seed Rolando Ruel, 6-0, 6-2, putting him on a collision with fellow national player Adelo Abadia in today’s semifinal matches.

This as the local bets fell one by one in the quarterfinal match-ups. Joseph Victorino barged into the semifinal round after taking the measure of Adonis Lominoque, 6-2, 6-2, while Alexander Lazaro dumped Ken Alburo, 6-2, 6-1.

Abadia, on the other hand, was stretched by Jessie Lapore to three sets before the latter retired while trailing in the third set, 5-1. Abadia earlier secured the first set, 6-2, while Lapore forced the decider by shutting out Abadia in the second set, 6-0.

Playing at 8 a.m. today for a spot in the championship at the Mantads tennis courts are Victorino versus Lazaro, and Arcilla versus Abadia. The championship will be held tomorrow. Emerald T. Longcop/UP Masscom Intern
