Dondon lifts SMB; SLR stuns Thunder
By Patrick C. Costelo

KENNETH Duremdes and Dennis Espino had double-double performances to lead Sta. Lucia clinch a much needed 95-89 win over league-leading Red Bull yesterday in a scorching opening game of the Samsung-PBA All-Filipino Cup double header at the Philsports Arena.

Meanwhile, Dondon Hontiveros sizzled with 29 points after a 12-of-14 clip as San Miguel solidified its place at the No.2 spot in Group A when the Beermen routed Ginebra, 103-97, in the main game.

Duremdes, who had been comfortable with Sta. Lucia’s run-and-gun assault, posted 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists after an 11-of-15 shooting to help the Realtors up from their previous out-of-town loss against San Miguel.

Now with an 8-7 record, Sta. Lucia shares the No.3 spot with Alaska in Group A while Red Bull is still at the top with an 11-4 card.

On the other hand, Espino prowled the shaded lane to collect 25 points, 13 boards, three dimes and two steals as he manned Sta. Lucia’s front court with Marlou Aquino, who stalled Davon Harp in the first half and drained 10 points.

Despite a good 53 percent shooting, Red Bull was behind at 44-43 at the half after committing already 12 turnovers against the Realtors defensive hustle.

Junthy Valenzuela and the reenergized Nelson Asaytono provided the first half ammo with nine and seven points respectively while Willie Miller and Davon Harp struggled on the offense.

Both squads were hot on the offense at the start of the third frame, taking turns on the lead but Sta. Lucia finally got the drivers seat after an 8-0 run that got them a 66-59 lead with 3:28 left in the period.
