The 10 best of the year By Leticia Suarez-Orendain
It rained on May 16 during the 24th annual awarding ceremonies of the Ten Most Outstanding High School Students of Cebu.
A project of the Kiwanis Club of Cebu (KCC), the Department of Education (DepEd) and Rhine Marketing Corporation (RMC), the award confers the Claude M. Wilson Scholarship Program, which started in 1980.
Named after the late Claude Marion Wilson Jr., the founder of RMC, it not only includes a scholarship in any course at any university but also actual office work through RMC’s Summer Job Program.
The rain swamped several places in Cebu that night, but it neither swamped the enthusiasm of the 10 nor award presentor Anne Marie D. Conejero, KCC president. With her were Dr. Carolino B. Mordeno, DepEd regional director and Hernando O. Streegan, RMC chief executive officer.
Four years ago, one awardee stood “here officially as an outstanding student with a plaque to show.
So dead-panned Vicente Joseph F. Sandoval, who graduated summa cum laude, BS Psychology at the University of San Carlos (USC). He encouraged this year’s batch to continue learning. The award gave a sense of vision and responsibility.
This year’s 10 are:
Kristy Anne M. Abello, a class salutatorian at the Cebu City National Science High School (CCNSHS).
Kristy, who wants to take up Business Administration with Accountancy, bagged the Oblation Scholar of the University of the Philippines (UP); first place, Outstanding Cebuano Youth Leaders high school category; and Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Excellence in Leadership Award.
Don Joven R. Agravante, CCNSHS graduate, must feed on Math. He placed first in the MTAP, DepEd Math Challenge (individual category, regional level); was the Mercury Drug awardee for Excellence in Math; and best in Math until graduation.
A second placer at the Student Technologist and Entrepreneurs of the Philippines skill competition (bookkeeping, regional level), he said, I am an ordinary person doing extraordinary things.” Surely he will do extraordinary deeds when he finishes taking up BS Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Eula Anne A. Ariate, Sacred Heart School for Girls class salutatorian, has won in essay and oratorical contests (first place) and has participated in track and field (Milo Olympics and Cebu City Olympics).
Her feat is the result of “hard work, discipline and my parents who gave me courage.” Her dream is to become a nurse.
Alfred Emmanuel M. Awe, Science and Technology Education Center graduate, bagged a clutch of awards like Search for the National KID Listo national level (first place); and National Storytelling Contest (third place).
The ambassador to the 2002 Colombo Plan DAP’s Youth Congress on Drug Abuse Prevention in Indonesia, Alfred wants to take up BS Accountancy.
Elisa Mae R. Dulangon, first honorable mention at the CCNSHS, was an Oblation Scholar (UP) awardee and editor-in-chief of Scholar’s Voice and press relations officer of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines Cebu Council. She wants to take up BS Management.
Not Ryan P. Ermac, the class valedictorian at Mandaue City Science High School. He wants to take up BS Chemical Engineering. His awards include Outstanding Scout of Cebu Council and Orator of the Year.
Neil Andrew U. Menjares, second honorable mention at USC Boys School, was a lay-out artist of the Junior Carolinian.
He wants to take up BS Architecture maybe to give substance to his statement “to walk that extra mile.”
Val B. Salares, a UP graduate, ranked first in the university admission test. He placed first at the ABE Intersecondary Quiz Bowl Peer Facilitator. He wants to take up nursing.
Ana Theresa C. Singcol, third honorable mention at the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion, was a staffer of the Blue & White; gold medal recipient of Children of Mary Award; and Consistent Merit Card recipient. She wants to take up Political Science.
Derwin Dexter S. Sy is a Bethany Christian School Supreme Student Council president and news editor of Talents Unlimited. Although he was the music coordinator of the Bethany Youth Fellowship 2002, he wants to pursue BS Information Technology.
Aside from Sandoval, Rhine also invited the other 2003 graduates of the Claude M. Wilson scholarship: Niña Khristinne D. Araneta (summa cum laude, USC), Rose Marie G. Pegarom (cum laude, UP-Visayas Cebu College) and Frederick Norman O. Oplado (cum laude, USC).
What could be warmer than the “plaque” of appreciation given by the four to Streegan: a stuffed toy dog. “May it remind all of the idealism of youth,” said Sandoval.
