Cesafi Jrs. MVP cager passes 1st round of UP tryouts
By Christian Ben Rodriguez

RANULFO Malinao, a former University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguar and 2002 Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Juniors basketball tournament Most Valuable Player, made the first-round selection of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.

Malinao, who hails from Isabel, Leyte, was one of more than 40 aspiring fresh high-school graduates who went to UP Diliman to try out for th varsity basketball team.

After two weeks of action, Malinao impressed UP Maroons head coach Lito Vergara enough to earn for the ex-Baby Jaguar a slot in the top 20 finalists together with former Don Bosco Technical Center Greywolves player Kenneth Robin.

“He’s learning everything there is to know about the level of playing here in the collegiate league,” Vergara told Sun.Star yesterday.

Vergara also said that Malinao is hard working and has good comprehension skills.

“He’s a quick learner and does everything we tell him to do inside the court,” Vergara said.

The newly-installed UP coach also said Malinao is very coachable but still has many things to improve on especially on defense.
