Shell loss sets Ginebra game
By Patrick C. Costelo

RED Bull staggered through its last elimination round game with a 108-104 victory over the struggling Shell yesterday in the Samsung-PBA All-Filipino Cup at the Philsports Arena.

Meanwhile, Asi Taulava was “The Rock” that he is against Purefoods, logging 27 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks, when the Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals outlasted the Hotdogs in overtime, 105-101.

The Thunder’s victory, their 14th in 18 outings, set up a do-or-die battle between Shell and Ginebra this Sunday, where the winner automatically advances to the quarterfinals as both teams lag at the bottom of Group A with identical 5-12 slates.

Man in the middle Davon Harp posted a dominating 29 markers, 13 rebounds and three assists as he muscled his way against Shell’s best defender, Chris Jackson, in a game which saw Red Bull pull through in the waning seconds.

Reigning MVP Willie Miller was the man behind the cardiac win as he drained a wide-open triple from the corner, cashing in on Shell’s sudden shift to the zone defense, giving Red Bull the 106-104 edge after Tony Dela Cruz’ drive gave the Turbo Chargers a 104-103 lead.

Before that, with six minutes left in the game, Shell held on at 92-91 with Dela Cruz and Hrabak pouring in their numbers on both ends while Harp and Mick Pennisi worked their way in the paint to keep Red Bull barely ahead.

Shell, which badly needed a win to tighten the rope on Ginebra’s neck, was behind by nine points in the opening canto but the streak-shooting Hrabak and hustle-man Dela Cruz, who finished with 28 points, got their offense rolling midway through the second period to take a 51-59 edge at the half even as Red Bull sizzled with a 60 percent shooting.

Shell’s defense caused 14 first-half turnovers for Red Bull, which Perry Ronquillo’s boys converted into 23 points in the first two quarters of play.
