Serna: ‘Fiesta Girl’ tilt tonight
By Roger Serna
Sounds & Images

Friend Ricky Pilapil informed this writer that tonight 15 young hopefuls will be vying for the coveted title as Liloan’s Fiesta Girl. It is the town’s version of a gay beauty pageant that showcases the uniqueness and diverseness of talents possessed by members of the third sex.

Inspired by the success of last year’s initial outing, the competition promises a bigger and more entertaining spectacle with candidates parading in fancy costumes, sexy swimsuits, colorful fun wear and elegant evening gowns.

The pageant unfolds at 8:30 p.m. at the Liloan Kai Sports Complex. Former sexy symbol turned television star Gino Antonio will be in attendance.

If you see around the city some stickers marked “I love this Citi!” on vehicle bumpers, don’t wonder. It’s part of the Citibank promo which gives motorists a chance to receive a gift pack plus the chance to avail themselves of any of Citibank’s promos, namely, the
3-in-1 Summer Fun Promo and the two-month Deferred Balance Transfer Promo.

Drive up to Shell Escario, or Excel Shell along Banilad road or Easy Gas Shell along ML Quezon ave. in Lapu-Lapu so that accredited agents may stick on the flashy stickers on your car.

The promo started yesterday and will run until May 30 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Colleague Orly Cajegas excitedly informed yours truly that his ward, the only R&B group in Cebu known as Lick, will have its first major concert come Aug. 2, a Saturday, at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The open-air concert will also feature the Viva Hot Babes and The Hunks. That will make the show more exciting and worth looking forward to. Mark the date, folks!

In one of the rare evenings that this writer gets the chance to sit in front of a TV set, I got the opportunity to watch comebacking actor Jao Mapa. He delineated the life of another actor, Ricardo Cepeda, Snooky Serna’s real-life better half, in the latter’s life story as dramatized in GMA 7’s Magpakailanman.

Jao was a young, hot property a few years back – before he took a “leave of absence” for a personal reason that has escaped this writer’s memory already. It was a big sacrifice, no doubt, on the part of the actor who had started to carve a name not only as a teen idol but also as promising dramatic actor.

He even had a softdrink commercial that further made his name a household byword. He must have successfully attained his goal for him to make a come- back to the celluloid world.

Playing only a supporting role in the TV episode naturally did not give Jao enough challenge to sink his teeth into but his presence was felt, nevertheless. More exposures and challenging roles in the future may help Jao regain his popularity or even rank him among the more bankable actors in the local film industry.

That particular episode somehow gave Snooky Serna’s followers a clear idea of what happened to her during the time when she temporarily bowed out of the limelight.

Some people unfairly judged her as having tried illegal drugs, which resulted in her excessive loss of weight. In the weekly program, Snooky related that she was actually waging a difficult fight against anorexia with her mom, her husband and children giving her the necessary support and encouragement.

She eventually won the bout and, as showbiz followers know, has made a comeback through television in the teleseries Habang Kapiling Ka. Undeniably, that Magpakailanman episode was very inspirational.
