Skygo nears bagging twice-to-beat edge By Rommel C. Manlosa
DEFENDING champions Skygo Motorcycle Riders inched closer to earning a second twice-to-beat incentive after stamping its class over cellar-dwelling Jaz Cola Kings, 87-76, even as All Care Insurance secured the top spot after eliminating Hapee Sparkling Gel following a heart-pounding 83-78 victory in the Adidas-Samsung CBF 2003 Concepcion Condura Summer League in Maasin City, Leyte Sunday evening.
Tonight, will be very important for both Skygo and Grachiya Energy Drink as they play to get the twice-to-beat edge against separate opponents at the San Fernando Sports Center.
Grachiya will play against Jaz in the first game while Skygo will take on General Feeds Mega Mix in the main game for the formally close of the elimination round tonight.
If Skygo and Grachiya finish with identical win-loss cards, the Riders will automatically get the No.2 slot and the incentive by virtue of its 89-71 win over Grachiya last May 14.
Grachiya has a psychological edge over the Kings following its 79-57 win last May 9, while Skygo eyes revenge after losing to the Feeds Masters, 58-73, last May 2.
Skygo started the game strong and banked on the explosive game of Mark Ababon to keep the Kings at bay after closing the first half ahead, 53-39.
Ababon topscored with 22 points while Dante Elim and Reggie Licanda added 11 points apiece to help the defending champions nail their sixth win in nine games.
Meanwhile, Miguelito Ducay had a breakout game as he topped All Care Insurers with 16 points, but it was the steady free-throw shooting of Jojo Maglasang and the desperate measures of the Teeth Sparklers that kept them afloat.
The score stood at 79-75 with only seconds left to play when Manuel Huelar sank a triple and got a bonus throw after getting a foul. However, Huelar failed to tie the score after he missed the charity shot.
Maglasang then scored three of the final four points of the game while Hapee prayed for a triple that never came.
