Council lauds 34 day-care workers
By Gingging A. Campaña

THE Cebu City Council has commended 34 day-care workers, two of them serving for 29 years now, for their untiring service and dedication to the well-being of Cebuano children.

Another ordinance has been drafted for the creation of the Cebu City Senior Citizens’ Council.

June 9 to 13 has been declared Day Care Workers’ Week to strengthen the mutual relationship, cooperation, unity and fellowship of day care workers.

It is aimed to acknowledge their service in the barangay as well as promote advocacy of the government’s programs and services.

Motion

The City Government, upon the motion of Councilors Manuel Legaspi and Carillo, recognizes the significance of the daycare centers in Cebu City in molding children socially and intellectually.

The daycare workers, even with minimal compensation, advance the children-oriented program of the government.

Two daycare workers - Norma Petallana, of the Kiwanis Daycare Center I, and Norma Boltron, of the Kiwanis Daycare Center II - have been in service since June 1974.

The rest has been serving for 10 to 24 years.

Treat

Some 132 daycare workers will be treated to a three-day celebration during the week. This includes a seminar on the Early Childhood Care and Development Law and Child 21, cultural presentations and fellowship from the rural and urban barangays.

The activities will be held at the City Hall grounds, at the Sacred Heart Social Hall and at Jovens Grill and Restaurant.

For the elderly, the City also wants to establish a council that will formulate policies and adopt measures mutually beneficial to them and the community.

The representation and inputs of the senior citizens would be a rich source of ideas for both legislative and executive arms of the City to advance the elderly’s welfare, a draft ordinance authored by Carillo read.

The proposal has been approved at first reading and referred to the committee on laws for review.
