Palace moves holiday, benefits to June 13
By Linette C. Ramos

INSTEAD of June 12 being a regular non-working holiday, Malacañang declared this year’s Independence Day a regular working day while June 13, a Friday, will be a special non-working day throughout the country.

The declaration will give workers across the country an opportunity to enjoy a three-day weekend from June 13 to 15.

Even if Presidential Proclamation 373 declares June 13 a special non-working day, employees who will report to work on that day will receive the additional pay entitled to them during a regular non-working holiday.

In a labor advisory, Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas said the regular holiday features of June 12, which falls on a Thursday this year, shall be observed on June 13 while June 12 shall be a normal working day.

Employees who will report to work on June 13 will be entitled to additional 100 percent of their daily wage on top of their basic pay for the day.

Those who will not work on June 13 will still receive their basic pay, the labor advisory said.

If it’s an employee’s rest day and the employee still reports to work, the worker will receive 260 percent of the basic pay.

Every year, the whole country celebrates Independence Day to recognize the patriotism and heroism of our countrymen who struggled for freedom and democracy.

Last May 28, the Cebu City Council passed a resolution asking President Arroyo to reconsider her decision declaring June 12 a working day.

Vice Mayor Michael Rama, in a privilege speech, pointed out the “historical pride and historical value” of June 12.

In the proclamation, Executive Secretary Alberto Romulo said that June 13 was declared a non-working day so that the country can enjoy a long weekend and promote domestic tourism, provided that the historical significance of Independence Day is maintained.

All activities and celebrations related to the observance of Independence Day shall remain to be observed on June 12 to enable all government officials and employees to participate fully in the activities, the proclamation said.
