Echaves: Here they come By Lelani P. Echaves
In writing last Monday about geriatric medicine, I misquoted Dr. Noel H. Ponce, the only geriatrician in Cebu. I had said that 80 percent of the geriatric population eventually develops dementia, or memory impairment or loss. Not so, the good doctor said. Rather that the most common cause (about 8 percent) of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. I stand corrected.

Two weeks more. And then human resources practitioners will be treated to a cache of thoughts, experiences and expertise from CEO’s and fellow managers who’ve made human resource concerns their comfort zone.
For people like me constantly on the search for women who’ve braved or even crashed through the glass ceiling, the third regional conference of the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP), Cebu chapter will be an avenue for meeting up close such women of substance.
Among these are Anna Maria M. Roqueza, IBM Country HR manager; Ann Margaret V. Santiago, HRMD Group Head of Smart Communications, Inc.; Ma. Elizabeth D. Nasol, AVP for HR of the San Miguel Corp.; and Imelda H. Centeno, VP for HR and Organizational Development for United Laboratories.
Anchored on the conference theme “The HR Advantage in the Midst of Global Challenges,” the ladies’ professional sharing will be on “Quality Work-Life: Balancing Work and Family” for Roqueza; “Strategic Rewards and Compensation” for Santiago; “Best Practice on Succession Management” for Nasol; and “Measuring HR Effectiveness for Improved Organizational Performance” for Centeno.
Roqueza has been with IBM for the past 21 years. She started as instructor in its education center, moved on to systems engineer, and from there, scaled the heights until her present position. In her capacity as professional development manager, she planned the career development and skills training for the services personnel in Global Services.
Santiago has to her credit over 20 years of solid human resource management experience. Her career started in 1983 with John Clements Consultants, Inc. where she became senior consultant in just four years. Later involvements included Kraft Foods, Inc. in 1987, and then Metro Pacific Corporation. Well grounded in all the facets of the HR function, she has been instrumental in making Smart Communications earn the award of “Best Employer in Asia, 2003” for the Philippine category.
Nasol has spent the recent 24 years of her professional life in HR, the last 16 of which have been at San Miguel Corp. Among her competencies are in mergers and acquisitions, integration, restructuring, rightsizing, culture building and HR systems alignment.
Lest our gentlemen will feel left out, perish the thought. For starters, the keynote speaker is Dr. Thomas J. Kral, cultural affairs officer for the US Embassy. The first plenary session will feature Arthur Aguilar, president and CEO of Victorias Milling Company, Inc., on the topic “Managing Adversity-Driven Changes.”
Another plenary session will have the engineers’ engineer Rogelio Q. Lim, general manager of East Asian Utilities Corp., on “The HR Role: Doing More with Less.” Other presentors are Benedict Hernandez, general manager of e-Telecare International Corp., and Ernesto G. Espinosa, AVP for HR and General Services for Fujitsu Computer Products Corp. of the Philippines.
Can an HR conference ever happen without the perpetually much-awaited labor forum?
To set fireworks to the roundtable discussion on “Security of Tenure vs. Management Prerogatives: The Legal Problems and Solutions” will be two ladies and two gentlemen, lawyers all, of course—Manolette Dinsay and Jose Maria Clint Fabiosa representing their own law firms; Conchita Jamora, legal counsel for San Miguel Corp.; and Hon. Violeta Ortiz-Bantug, labor arbiter of the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC).
The two-day conference starts on June 19 with the opening of exhibits by Cebu City’s First Lady, Margot Osmeña, assisted by Carlos Go, president of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce. To welcome participants separately will be lawyer Alan Fontanosa, PMAP-Cebu chairman; Cebu city vice-mayor Michael Rama and PMAP national president Ramon Medina. To declare the confab open is Virgincita Guanzon, conference chair.
Interested parties should call Paulette or Vera at telephones 2548049 and 3415612.
