Alazas edges Veloso for title
By Patrick C. Costelo

GLORIA Alazas walked away with a 68 net and a close one-point edge over runner-up Jo Veloso to snatch the Class A championship Wednesday of Cebu Country Club Ladies Chapter Monthly Medal Tournament.

Ruling Class B was Cely Chiongbian, who racked up a 69 net finish, beating Bambi Fornacier by two points.

Starting with a 49 gross on the first round, which saw her trail Jo Veloso by two points, Alazas picked up in the final round with a 43 to clutch her 68-net feat after a 24-point handicap.

Veloso, on the other hand, logged another 47 in the next round for a 94 gross, finishing with a 69 after holding 25 handicap points.

Meanwhile, Eva Hino and Ryoko Nagai settled for a deadlock at the third spot of the top class, lagging 11 points behind Veloso after both finished with a 74 net.

Hino hit rounds of 44 and 48 while Nagai had a 42 and a 47 but the former had an 18 handicap while the latter kept a 15.

In Class B, competition between the top two finishers scorched as Chiongbian and Fornacier fired a 50 each in the opening round. However, the former managed to build a four-point edge in the next 18 holes, 45-49, to reap a two-point edge in the final tally.

Two net points behind was Mila Chan, who copped a 105 gross to seize a 73 net, while Sale Dy was another two points behind with a 75 net production. Kazuko Maeda was fifth overall with a 77 net as Helen Yap tracked with a 79 to land sixth.
