Keppel wins Game 1; Cokaliong settles for 4th slot over Puerto
By Edmundo T. Maxilom

KEPPEL Cebu Shipyard Inc. strangled back-to-back champion Aboitiz Superferry, 75-67, in the opener of their best-of-three Finals, while Cokaliong Shipping bombed out Puerto Servicio de Cebu, 78-67, to earn fourth runner-up honors in the Inter-Shipping Basketball Association’s (Isba) 3rd Reynaldo Brojan Sr. Memorial Cup at the Cebu Coliseum Monday.

Keppel, still undefeated in 10 games, shoots for the jugular in tonight’s Game 2 where it is highly favored to end the two-year reign of the Superferries.

Andrew Pacquibot led Keppel with 20 points, while Normal Pancho chipped in 16 to offset the offensive vacuum left by Gary Enriquez, who was clamped down to only seven points.

It was a relatively close fight with Aboitiz incessantly pulling within striking distance, but Keppel’s fortitude and craftiness in the face of mounting pressure paid off in the end.

With one leg on the grave, Aboitiz seeks to break its two-game slump against Keppel and forge a deciding game to at least keep its flickering grand-slam hopes alive.

Earlier, Cokaliong Shipping consummated a two-game sweep of Puerto Servicio de Cebu this season en route to its best ever fourth-place finish in the three-year-old league.

Isba scoring-machine Chester Cokaliong punctuated what has been another fruitful season in sterling fashion as he was named Player of the Game after drilling in 15 points, all from the 3-point territory.

He dropped three of those bombs in a scorching third-quarter breakaway that kept Puerto at bay.
