NBSA 35-above to open June 22
By Edmundo T. Maxilom

MORE than 200 35-year-old and above basketball players expected to join the 7th Neighboring Barangay Sports Association tournament scheduled to open on June 22 at Barangay Mabolo Sports Center, said Day-as Barangay Captain Michael Ocleasa Sr., the founder of the NBSA.

Players will come from 11 barangays in the city: Tinago, Day-as, Santa Cruz, San Antonio, Zapatera, T. Padilla, Cogon Ramos, Lorega, Hipodromo, Carreta, Pari-an, Camagayan, Apas and Mabolo.

Brgy. Tejero, Cogon, T. Padilla and Sta. Cruz put up two teams each.

“We are still expecting more barangays to join as we will have a meeting this coming June 14 in Lorega. Barangay officials and tanods are exempted from the age-limit rule,” Ocleasa said.

The league was organized on 1996, after the residents of Brgy. Day-as aged 35 and above approached Ocleasa, who was at that time a barangay councilor to ask him to organize a league suited for them.

“When I was a barangay councilor, there was no 35-above tournament and as what we organized was an inter-sitio for juniors, midgets and seniors divisions because the barangay had no budget,” Ocleasa said.

“After they approached me we included their division and when Cogon Ramos, Santa Crus and T. Padilla knew of it, they said they wanted to join.

“We organized this so that we can know each other and build friendship among ourselves and our theme is that `Unity through Sports.’”

Last year the champions were T. Padilla, which received P15, 000 cash prize and 15 sacks of rice from Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

The yearly tournament is also sponsored by Rep. Raul Delmar and Joy Young.

Registration fee is P1,500 per team.
