Double celebration By Therese Y. Manulat
What’s a fiesta like without the patron saint, local beauties and politicians taking centerstage? Unthinkable in this side of the globe. For fiesta time is the time “to honor the patron saint and renew acquaintances and make new ones,” as aptly said by Cebu Vice-governor John Gregory Osmeńa, in his welcome remarks during the Ms. Toledo 2003 coronation night.
June 12 is a red-letter day in Toledo city. Of course, the country celebrates Philippine Independence Day, but in this mountainous city by the sea, it too, is the feast of their patron saint, St. John de Sahagun. A week-long schedule of activities kept Toledanos awake and on their feet: the fluvial parade, trade fair, religious processions, sports competitions. Playing host were the city officials led by Mayor Arlene “ Dydee” Zambo and Vice-Mayor Rudy Espinosa.
Coronation night was spiced up by the presence of sexy star Angela Velez who rendered song and dance numbers garbed in titillating outfits. The crowd’s loud cheers prompted her to give an encore to her much applauded numbers. Robin da Rosa, had the female audience swooning with his suave emceeing skills. While Rep. Antonio P. Yapha satisfied the crowd’s curiosity by talking about Imee Marcos’ forthcoming senatorial bid.The youthful-looking Imee said Toledo city brings back memories of her Kabataang Barangay days, mentioned, too, her friends the Lebumfacil clan.
Allan Jayme Rabaya together with Gani Villarojo were the proud composers of the Toledo hymn introduced to the public for the first time.
Let the pictures tell you more.
