Bert to go for OPBF title vs. Janiola’s conqueror By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
PHILIPPINE light-flyweight champion Bert Batawang shoots for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) crown in a mandatory title fight against a Japanese champion.
Batawang, ranked by the OPBF as the No.1 contender among the 108-pound fighters in the Orient and Pacific, is the mandatory challenger to Japanese champion Shingo Yamaguchi, who won the vacant regional title over Filipino Wyndell Janiola by split decision last May 12.
Yamaguchi has 14 wins against three losses and one draw. He also has seven wins by knockout.
Batawang, fighting under the SGG Boxing Stable, holds a 27-9-3 win-loss-draw record with 20 wins inside the distance. His manager Sammy Gello-ani is currently working on the title bout after one of his fighters, Fabio Marfa, failed to win the diadem in December last year.
Under the stewardship of Gello-ani, Batawang, a 12-year veteran, went 15-3 and his latest conquest was against Mongolian sensation Erdene Chuluun last Feb. 22 in Kangwondo, South Korea by a ninth-round TKO.
One of his losses was handed by Janiola last year. Batawang won the RP title against Rodel Quilaton last Jan. 19 when Janiola relinquished the throne to challenge IBO 108 belt champion Mhinkiza Myekeni of South Africa.
Janiola dropped to No.3 in the OPBF, while another former RP champion, Celso Danggod, is ranked No.8.
