Blue Eagles vs. Grachiya today By Rommel C. Manlosa
GRACHIYA Iron Energy Boosters have the honor of being the first team to test the UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles as the Adidas-Samsung CBF-Ateneo Bill Wong Friendship Cup opens at the Cebu Coliseum at 5 p.m. today.
The Blue Eagles completely reorganized their line-up after the departure of key player Enrico Villa-nueva, last year’s Most Valuable Player who is now playing for Red Bull in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Aside from Villanueva, Marco Benitez, Chris Quimpo, Andrew Cruz, Sonny Tadeo, JR Elmido and Dom Banal have also graduated, leaving Rich Alvarez, Paolo Bugia, Larry Fonacier, LA Tenorio, Magnum Membrere and Wesley Gonzales the burden to defend the title.
To fill the slack, coach Joel Banal recruited rookie players that include Cebuano skyscraper Zach Estoesta. Others who will be debuting for Ateneo are Ford Arao, Joy del Rosario, Macky Escalona, JC Intal, Doug Kramer, Martin Quimson, Christian Tiu, John Uichico and Eric Yao.
Just like the Blue Eagles, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers are also polishing their skills as they gun for a third straight title in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).
The Green Lancers, carrying the Skygo Motorcycle jersey in the CBF-Ateneo Friendship Cup, and the Blue Eagles engage in a highly anticipated battle during the tournament’s final day on Sunday.
The team with the most number of wins will be declared champion in the three-day, four-team competition.
Today’s main game will feature the Summer League championship protagonists Skygo and General Feeds Megamix at 7 p.m.
