Mechanical engineers to suggest ways for LGUs to cut trash, earn from recycling waste materials
By Arvy E. Lopez

TO have successful waste management, the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) will suggest a solid waste management system to the local government units (LGUs).

During a press gathering at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel (WCCH), PSME chairman Antonio Tompar said the Material Recovery Facility would involve the proper segregation of garbage and in so doing reduce garbage by 50 percent.

Tompar said this system would greatly benefit the LGUs since it would be installed at no initial cost.

The waste management system, which would be presented at the WCCH during the 2nd National Conference and Exhibition on Clean Air Act and Ecological Solid Waste Management Act Compliance, would also create businesses for the LGUs.

Tompar said only 30 percent of thrown materials are garbage. The rest are recyclable.

The LGUs would earn from these recyclable materials by selling them, he said.

The conference on June 26-28 would showcase the latest technologies and systems on related economical and effective compliance for solid waste management and air quality management.

The event is being conducted in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources 7, Department of Interior and Local Government 7 and the Department of Science and Technology 7.

The PSME expects 1,000 delegates this year.
