Sars scare increases subscription to PLDT video conferencing by 200%
By Jessica B. Natad

THE outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) virus has made the world realize the importance of information technology and given a telecommunications company the idea for a business in Cebu.

The Sars scare increased the subscription of PLDT’s communication tools, especially its video-conferencing technology, according to Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. vice president for business solutions Nerissa Ramos.

“The Sars outbreak provided an opportunity for technology companies like PLDT to bridge transactions all over the world,” she said during PLDT’s customer event at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel last week.

The event showcased PLDTs managed global services, a full suite of value-added and international networking services.

Ramos said PLDT’s subscription of video conferencing increased 200 percent on the onset of the Sars.

PLDT has video conferencing facilities for rent in Manila.

The company is now planning to put one up in Cebu “immediately,” she said.

But Ramos encouraged Cebu-based companies to put up their own video-conferencing facilities, saying the benefits outweighed the costs.

“PLDT has the facility to make a company’s video-conferencing facility work efficiently,” she said.

Ramos said PLDT’s other business solutions enable the company to offer diverse services for various needs of the companies.

Other services include Fibernet, PLDT’s bilateral private line offering. Fibernet is a value-for- money solution available to corporate customers delivered in partnership with international telecommunications companies.

PLDT is also offering the Arcstar solution. Arcstar is a network support service that enables a company to efficiently communicate using voice and data to other countries, according to a document furnished Sun.Star.
