Ani-anihan Festival By Linette C. Ramos
UNLIKE past fiesta celebrations when townsfolk stayed home during daytime, Tabuelanons now need not wait for sundown to have fun in celebration of the feast of their patron, St. John the Baptist.
Festivities at the town plaza used to be limited to evening activities - discos, pageants and singing contests — until the launching of the Ani-anihan Festival last Tuesday.
The festival got its name from the word “ani,” meaning harvest. It had residents of all 12 barangays street-dancing the methods and techniques of farming and harvesting.
Choreography depicted the growth of the town through the intercession of their patron.
“Tabuelan used to be a very sleepy town. Slowly, we have progressed and the locals believed it happened because of the intercession of St. John the Baptist,” said Municipal Councilor Zito Gallo, executive committee chairman of the festival.
After the street parade, the locals gathered at the town plaza for the awarding of the best contingent. The festival attracted a huge crowd, something that seldom happens in this northwestern town.
Mayor Rex Casiano Gerona said the festival is aimed at gathering the townsfolk in Poblacion for the fiesta.
With the town having no unique feature or tourist attraction, Gerona hopes the festival will give outsiders a reason to drop by.
