RJ rocks

It was inevitable that people were bound to have a good time that night.

On June 14, all roads led to the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino (WCCHC) for the much awaited party with “Rj and Friends”. As early as 6 p.m., baby boomers came in droves regardless of heavy rains and traffic.

The show began promptly at 9 p.m. with RJ’s signature take on the song Pipeline by The Ventures and there was no stopping the fun from then on.

The incomparable Ramon ‘RJ’ Jacinto paved the way for the crowd to be on an all-out nostalgic party high. Exhibiting his ever-masterful guitar playing skills and distinct singing style, RJ, together with his band, was evidently versatile. The band is composed of vocalists Angeline Bonnevie and Rowena Erana, keyboardist Carlo Gaa, bassist Rolando Roldan, guitarists Gabby Jacinto and Benjamin Evia.

The band’s repertoire that night traversed the spectrum of musical eras including the elemental RJ ‘50s and ‘60s sound that paid homage to legends like The Beatles, The Monkeys, The Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, Roy Orbison and, of course, Elvis Presley. Infused with ‘70s disco staples like Donna Summer’s Last Dance, Abba’s Dancing Queen, The Hues Corporation’s Rock The Boat, they even topped the show with ‘90s music like Ricky Martin’s Livin La Vida Loca plus RJ’s own rendition of Matud Nila.

The party was the second of a two-event series dubbed “My Mommy Can Dance, My Daddy Can Rock N` Roll” which was a production of Waterfront Entertainment Corporation. The first was held on May 10 and marked Mother’s Day and it featured the Spirit of 67. The series was presented by Pepsi, Smart, Cebu Pacific, San Miguel Beer, Nestle Calcium Plus, Kaona Grill, Moms Radio 88.3, RJ 100.3, 103.5 Wild FM and WCCHC.

Soon, Waterfront Entertainment Corp. will team up with Active Imaging to present another engagement featuring stand-up comic Rex Navarette on Aug. 2 at the Atlantic Hall of WCCHC. For details, one may call 232-7799.
