3 road mishaps: 2 dead, 3 others, kids, injured
By Rene H. Martel

A 22-YEAR-OLD teacher who was eight months pregnant died after the tricycle she was riding turned turtle in Barangay Cambuhawi, Balamban, Cebu early morning last Tuesday.

Three siblings, ages nine, 10, and 11, were also injured during the incident, which police said happened when the tricycle’s defective front wheel got stuck and stopped turning.

Hours after, an Argao town resident died after his head got crushed by a dump truck’s double rear tires in Naga town.

The driver failed to see the victim who was resting under the truck after eating supper. The driver and his companions thought he simply left without bothering to tell them.

Both incidents happened a day after a 54-year-old man died in the hospital after a tricycle bumped him in the southern town of Carcar last Sunday.

In the north of Cebu, Aisa Castillo, 22, of Barangay Prensa, did not make it to Balamban District Hospital after she got pinned under the tricycle.

John Edward Sabalande, 11, and siblings Jennife, 10, and Benjie, 9, suffered injuries but were sent home after they were given first aid treatment.

All four were on their way to nearby Barangay Cambuhawi National School, where Canillo taught high school students.

Tricycle driver Cosme Cordesar Artajo, 54, is now detained at the Balamban Police Station after a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide was filed against him.

PO1 Celso Makidato said the children’s mother came to them yesterday and said she was willing to agree to a settlement if Artajo would reimburse their medical expenses.

He said he tried to rev up the tricycle and drive, but the front wheel remained stuck.

In the Naga incident, Jose Baculi, who was in his 20s, of Barangay Alinbihog, Argao, instantly died after he was ran over by the truck (GLW) 583) driven by Nicolas Hermoso of Danao City at 9 p.m.

Hermoso, in an interview, said he started the engine and the truck started moving when the driver of another truck behind him yelled that he killed somebody.

He and other truck drivers and truck boys earlier stopped in Barangay Lutac to have dinner.

When they checked the body, they recognized it as that of Baculi, the “truck boy” or helper of the truck whose driver told Hermoso about the accident.

Hermoso said he did not see Baculi, who rested or was sleeping under the truck.

Baculi did not show up 30 minutes after asking permission to urinate in a corner, so they thought he left without bothering to inform them.

Hermoso is now detained at Naga Police Station jail.

In Tangason, Valladolid, Carcar town, Vicente Sandoy, 54, died around 4 a.m. last Monday after the tricycle driven by Alex Alcover of Barangay Tuyom hit him Sunday afternoon.

Alcover said a vehicle overtook the tricycle he was driving and blocked his path as it swerved back to their lane, forcing him to veer sharply to the side of the road, hitting the victim in the process.

Sandoy was brought to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, where he died around 4 a.m. last Monday.
