Man, 90, fights off rob attempt By Allan I. Varquez
THREE persons were wounded, including the knife-wielding thief, during a foiled robbery attempt in Barangay Lawaan I, Talisay City yesterday afternoon.
Taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City were house owner Felipe Alforque, 90, and the suspect identified as Bobby Sanyona, 29.
Alforque suffered a knife wound in the neck, while Sanyona suffered gunshot wounds in the buttocks, left leg and left shoulder and three knife wounds in the head.
Alforque’s son Geoxes, 53, was slightly wounded in the forehead and was treated at the Talisay City District Hospital.
Sanyona allegedly entered the Alforques’ house through the kitchen past 4 p.m.
A boy, who lives next door to the Alforques, said he saw a man with his face covered with cloth enter the victims’ house through the kitchen door.
Alforque was in his room sleeping, while Geoxes was in the living room watching television.
Sanyona would have succeeded in robbing the Alforques had the father not woken up and saw the suspect already in his room.
Alforque tried to fight the suspect but as he is already old and weak, Sanyona easily subdued him and wounded him in the neck with the knife.
Geoxes told police he was watching TV when he heard his father scream for help.
Thinking his father was outside, he ran out before going back in and into his father’s room.
When he opened the door, Sanyona attacked him with the knife.
He fought back and tried to grab the knife. As they struggled, they reached the kitchen where Geoxes also grabbed a knife. They were still grappling when Alforque came out of his room with a .380 pistol and shot Sanyona thrice.
The bursts of the gunfire drew the attention of the neighbors, including barangay tanod chief Romulo Canenda, whose house is about 15 meters away.
Canenda then called Barangay Councilor Joy Tumulak and Andres Cañada, also a tanod. Together they checked Alforque’s house and saw Sanyona sprawled in the kitchen, bloodied.
They rushed both Alforque and Sanyona to the VSMMC using the ambulance of the Talisay District Hospital.
Talisay City Police Director Pablo Florante Lamosao Jr. and a team from the Homicide Section recovered the two knives, the .380 pistol and three empty bullet shells.
Tumulak said that while on their way to Cebu City on board the ambulance, Sanyona repeatedly asked for forgiveness from Alforque.
