Go pledges support to PNC, offers UC as billeting center By Christian B. Rodriguez Sun.Star Staff Reporter
UNIVERSITY of Cebu president Augusto Wong Go has assured the organizing committee his full support for the upcoming Philippine National Championships here in November.
Cebu City Councilor Jack Jakosalem told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that Go pledged his assistance to the event, offering UC as one of the billeting centers for the thousands of athletes expected.
During the Cebu City Sports Commission meeting last Tuesday, Jakosalem proposed that private schools be tapped as billeting centers rather than the public schools.
The city does not have to spend on repairs for the athletes’ quarters because the private schools are well maintained, he reasoned.
“That would mean big savings for us since this a national event,” Jakosalem said, adding that he also intends to tap other private schools. “We will also ask the help of UV through its president Eduardo Gullas since they are one of the biggest universities in Cebu and their school can house thousands of athletes from different regions,” Jakosalem said.
Jakosalem said the city will provide portable toilets to the schools that will heed their call.
Meanwhile, the sports commission has identified the persons tasked to oversee the qualifying events for the Cebu City contingent.
Tyke Abella will handle arnis, while National Master Bombi Aznar and National Chess Arbiter Lincoln Yap will spearhead the selection of athletes for chess.
Others are Cebu Football Association (CFA) president Jonathan Maximo for football, Renato Dychangco for golf, Vic Fernandez for judo, Merle Concepcion for sepak takraw, Jessica Honoridez for table tennis, Nonoy Jopson for triathlon, John Pages and Fritz Tabura for lawn tennis, Glenn Soco for volleyball and beach volleyball, Mark Aliño for weightlifting and Boying Rodriguez for cycling and mountainbiking.
The sports directors of Cebu City’s teams in danceport, taekwondo, athletics, boxing and gymnastics will take charge in selecting their own pool of athletes to compete in the Visayas elimination.
The CCSC has yet to appoint the people in-charge for swimming, karatedo, basketball and billiards.
