Home-away format in effect this seaon

THE Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament will adopt a home-and-away format when it opens its third season on Aug. 3 at the University of San Carlos Gym.

The home-and-away format, which was utilized during the presidency of Jose “Dodong” Gullas in the 1999 season of the Cesafi’s predecessor, the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA), is one of the innovations by the Cesafi board.

“On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Cesafi games will be brought to schools that have their own gymnasiums. For those who have non, their games will be played at the USC Gym,” USJ-R athletic moderator Dioscoro Himotas told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.”

Those have basketball gyms that can host the games are University of the Visayas, University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of Cebu and University of Southern Philippines. Saturdays and Sundays, games will be held at the USC Gym.

The decision was reached during the coaches’ meeting yesterday at the UC auditorium, presided by Cesafi commissioner Baldomero Estenzo.

Himotas said there will be a women’s tournament this season with four schools competing – UC, Velez College, Cebu Doctors College and USC, the champion of the 1st Inter-School Summer tournament. Cebu Institute of Technology is also interested to join the tournament.

“I need to talk to our school president for USJ-R to conduct a tryout for the women’s basketball team. Other schools have teams (so we should also have our own),” Himotas said.

The Cesafi board will try to convince Cebu Doctors College and Southwestern University to put up a team this season.
