Not invited, Mandaue skips Seag-qualifier Manila race By Jade S. Violeta
DUE to lack of a formal invitation, Mandaue City wasn’t be able to send a track-and-field delegation to the inaugural Manila Marathon, one of the 2003 Vietnam Southeast Asian Games (Seag) qualifying tournaments, in Manila last Sunday.
Sheryl Ouano, Mandaue City Sports Commission chairperson, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday they waited for a formal communication from Manila as the city was very interested to join the event, which was set on an out-and-back course starting at the front of the Quirino grandstand in Manila, but none came.
“Wa gyud ta makapadala og team kay we’ve been waiting for a formal invitation from Manila pero wala man gyu’y niabot,” Ouano said.
Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano received an informal invitation from Manila City Mayor Lito Atienza to join the event during the recent 3rd dyAB Anniversary Run inside the ABS-CBN compound in Barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City.
Mayor Ouano said earlier he needed to ask organizers if the fares and accommodation of the athletes would be shouldered by Manila before they would have decided to send their own team. None came as of yesterday.
However, Sheryl said Mandaue still plans to send a team to other later Seag marathon qualifying tournament as they have already picked the athletes to make up the team.
Ouano though didn’t release the names of the athletes as, according to her, they still have to meet to finalize things up.
“I will be leaving for Manila within the week or the next to go to the Philippine Sports Commission office to ask for the different schedule of activities for the Seag qualifying tournaments,” she said.
“Kinahanglan gyud moadto ko kay lisod kaayo kung mawala ta sa passing aning Seag qualifying tournaments kay sayang kaayo kay daghan ra ba gyud ta’g potential qualifiers,” said Ouano. (We have to join or we will be left behind in the Seag qualifying tournaments as we have potential qualifiers.)
The Manila Marathon was organized by the Manila Sports Council (Masco) and sponsored by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. It drew the participation of some 10,000 runners from all over the country.
The competition, which featured the full 42.195-kilometer race, 10km, 5km and 3km fun runs, was designated by Go Teng Kok, president of the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association, as one of the qualifying and tune-up races for the Vietnam Southeast Asian Games in December.
