Serna: A date with Elvis, July 5 By Roger Serna Sounds & Images
Wow! We just looked sideways, or perhaps blinked a few times, and what do you know? We’re already in the month of July! Whew! Kinda fast, man? Yeah, man! Ngano man? Ha, ha.
It’s just that. Time really flies that fast. Sad reality? Whatever! Common, keep pace! Aside from mall sales and what have you’s, what does July have in store for us?
My goodness, it seems like there’s no holiday this month. Why, haven’t you had enough of those “long weekends”? C’mon! This time it’s “long weeks.” Shucks! No choice. Argh!

Two Saturdays ago, this writer had the privilege of sitting down as one of the judges of the first-ever Ms. Tabuelan beauty pageant along with sought-after choreographer and director Junjet Primor, noted hairstylist and make-up artist Emi Ayag, Ms. Cebu 2002 Melanie Ediza, Board Member Josefina “Ina” Asirit and two distinguished sons of Tabuelan.
We were able to reach that progressive northwestern town through the invitation of Mayor
Rex and Marifi Gerona, and Councilor Malyn Paradero.
As we watched her walk around really fast, as she tried to keep the proceedings run as smoothly as possible, while at the same time attending to guests, it looked like Marifi was not very heavy with child. Whew! Tough job, but she looked like she just breezed through it.
The efforts paid off as the pageant was a resounding success. The candidates, though very young and inexperienced, also did their best in showing off their best form in the production number, swimwear and evening gown segments.
Yet, for first timers, the ladies did not exhibit clumsiness or awkward stances. Neither did they try to conceal their baby fat, but managed to show a brave front. Attagirls!
Though visibly nervous, the girls passed the Q&A portion with flying colors. It was evident from the start though that one of the ladies was leading the way, not only receiving the applause from the audience, but also winning special awards along the way.
In the end, she was crowned Ms. Tabuelan 2003. Congratulations, Lovelle Bongo! Ditto to her court and other special awardees. Most of all, congratulations to the organizers for a job well done.

Here’s something for the avid followers of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. No, he hasn’t resurrected, silly!
Somebody who really adores the legend and helps keep Elvis’ memory alive is going to stage a show this weekend. Retired medical doctor-turned entertainer, Dr. Bernard Pino, will share with is fellow-Cebuanos the talent that earned him the tag as the “Elvis Presley of Michigan, USA.”
Pino has been devoted to his passion for music ever since tragedy struck and took his better half away, leaving him unable to focus on his medical profession. As the cliché goes, medicine’s loss is entertainment’s gain.
In A Tribute to Elvis, Pino will impersonate The King of Rock and Roll, complete with the famous sideburns, the wide collar, bare chest, sexy gyrations and all, Las Vegas style.
To provide the able support are the FM Music Royale, the Knapsax Dancers and The Sweet Carnations. Novo Bono directs. Doy Montana conducts and arranges the music.
The event is scheduled on Sat., July 5, at The Courtyard of The Village, starting at 8 p.m. See you there!
