Speak out: Don’t make Silot Bay a dumping ground
By ANTONIO SASING
Sibafafimco chairman

We, the members and officers of Silot Bay Farmers and Fishermen Multi-purpose Cooperative (Sibafafimco) firmly oppose the suggestion of The Freeman columnist Valeriano Avila in his column published in the May 10, 2003 issue of the Freeman.

We oppose Avila’s proposal to rechannel the drainage canal of the Manila Memorial Park cemetery to Silot Bay for these reasons:

For one, Silot Bay is a fishing ground of the marginal fishermen and farmers of Liloan and other neighboring towns as well as the spawning ground for fishes.

Also, Sibafafimco has fish cages, fishpens and miracle holes in Silot Bay for its kitong breeding project.

Silot Bay is also one of the swimming grounds of the residents of Liloan and other neighboring towns. Farmers from different mountain barangays also come to Silot Bay to swim, catch fish and shells.

We do not want Silot Bay to be made a dumping ground for polluted waste.

We pray that the Sangguniang Bayan of Poblacion, Liloan Cebu and Environment Management Bureau-Department of Environment and Natural Resources 7 will not consider and adopt the idea of Mr. Avila.
