Man, in his 20s, jumps from 3rd floor of mall, lands in hospital

SHOPPERS in an uptown mall were alarmed when an unidentified man jumped from the third floor and landed on the first floor early yesterday afternoon.

According to witnesses shopping at the Ayala Center Cebu, a man in his 20s was walking back and forth at 1:30 p.m. in the corridor by the food court, which is under renovation.

The man was later identified, but Sun.Star is withholding his name.

He reportedly climbed over the railings and leapt, landing in front of Lucerne, a watch and jewelry shop in Paseo Marina of the mall.

Employees of the shop were surprised, saying they felt the floor shake and heard a thud.

A salesgirl told reporters that when they heard screams from outside, they thought these were just teenagers. On weekends, groups of teenagers often gather on the second floor of the mall and make a lot of noise, she said.

They were shocked to see a man lying on the floor in front of their shop, writhing in pain.

His nose was bleeding and his eyelids red.

Guards of a jewelry shop on the second floor saw his body hurtling down from the third floor.

Some shoppers thought a celebrity was around when they saw a crowd gather around the man.

He was immediately brought to the Perpetual Succour Hospital by guards on duty, using the company ambulance.

According to Cebu Holdings Inc. customer affairs manager Ver dela Cerna, the jumper was out of harm’s way.

He said that if necessary, Ayala Center Cebu might pay for his hospital expenses.

Dela Cerna explained that while they have several guards on duty on each floor, they did not stay in one place as they were instructed to roam around the mall.

“We cannot really avoid such incidents unless the guard is there at the proper time. It also happened so fast,” dela Cerna said.

They were also unaware of his reasons for jumping from the third floor, saying their main interest was just to rescue him. MEA
