ALA Boy wins in 39 seconds By ROMMEL C. MANLOSA Sun.Star Staff Reporter
SHERWIN Paro was graceful, precise and too powerful for Nathan Barcelona in their shortened fight Saturday night in the main event of the Sammy G. Gello-ani Boxing promotion “Back 2 Back” at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
Paro kept the veteran Barcelona at bay with precise uppercuts and headshots en route to a another technical knockout in 2:05 of the fourth round.
Quick win
However, an undercard fight took a piece of the limelight when upcoming Rocky Fuentes, a member of the New Generation ALA Boys, scored the quickest win of an eventful night that saw seven of the nine bouts fail to reach the distance.
SGG Boxing Stable ace and RP 108-pound champion Bert Batawang, on the other hand, proved too much for Sherwin Manatad in the other main feature. Batawang found Manatad a tough customer, but when the Mindanao-based fighter got too comfortable, the national champion unleashed powerful shots to score a TKO in 2:30 of the third round in their fight scheduled for 10.
Fuentes hit a powerful straight on Dodong Zalde’s head before attacking the midsection. With just two body shots, the fight was over after referee Tony Pizons reached the count at the 39-second mark of the first round.
The fight ended faster than the feisty introduction for Fuentes.
“That was the quickest victory I’ve ever seen for any of the ALA Boys. Not even Edito Villamor pulled a knockout win that quick,” said the ALA Boys mentor Antonio Lopez Aldeguer.
Barcelona protest
Barcelona fought like a raging bull as he attacked Paro after the opening bell with wild punches, keeping the young boxing sensation on his guard early. But when Paro found his range, Barcelona was on the receiving end, while the visitor’s shots were either blocked or hit nothing but air.
Paro, the RP No.1 flyweight contender who is eyeing to scale up to the heavier 115lb division, decked Barcelona in the third round with a wicked left and carried the flurries into the fourth round as the Misamis Oriental native staggered after being hit with a hammer-strong straight on his forehead.
As Barcelona tried to regain balance, Paro unleashed an uppercut and referee Pizons was quick to stop the fight, preventing the besieged fighter from absorbing more punishment. However, Barce-lona’s corner protested Pizons’ decision, insisting that the stoppage was premature.
Fuentes’ quick workout overshadowed Reynald Tribo’s TKO win over Ricky Binueza in 1:14 of the fourth round. Tribo’s precise body punches dropped Binueza before the second round bell and middle of the 3rd round. The flurries of the fourth round prompted Binueza’s corner men to throw the towel and Pizons declared Tribo for his second KO victory.
Cebuano casualty
In the main supporting match, Mike Domingo, the RP No.5 bantamweight contender from Davao’s VJA stable, scored a brutal fifth-round stoppage over erstwhile undefeated knockout artist Nonoy Plomeda, the boxing card’s only Cebuano casualty.
It was a surprising end to a fight that was a nip-and-tuck affair in the first four rounds. Plomeda, aptly nicknamed “The Terminator” for his stalking, predatory demeanor in the ring, never got his engine at full throttle against the offbeat pace of Domingo, whose crouching, bobbing style frustrated Plomedo.
Early in the fifth, the two engaged in a phone-booth exchange of punches that proved to disastrous to the younger Plomedo. Domingo connected with a series of crushing head and body hooks from both sides, rocking Plomedo before Domingo set up a devastating right cross to the head that ended the fight at 1:46 in the fifth.
Another New ALA Boy, Rey Bautista, used his longer reach to score a knockout in 2:18 of the third round over Larry Manganit. Bautista patiently waited until he caught Manganit in a corner where he unleashed his powerful shots. The fight ended with a devastating blow to the body.
Reman Salim, another of the New ALA Boys fame, failed to emulate his fellow ALA Boys’ knockout wins despite scoring a knockdown in the fifth round against John Tacbobo. Salim won by unanimous decision.
Ailing fighters
Bautista’s demolition job of Manganit and Salim’s victory over Tacbobo was even more remarkable considering both were inflicted with flu and were nowhere in top condition.
Reynald Tribo was just as impressive, notching a TKO over Ricky Binueza. Armed with punishing power in both fists, Tribo pummeled Binueza to the head and body, prompting Terry Alivio to step in and end the fight at 1:14 of the fourth.
Edmund Velayo also scored a TKO over Roldan Malinao in 2:28 of the opening round, while Cerilo Cabellon scored a unanimous decision win over Edwin Tacbobo. (With a report from Glenn C. Michelena) |
