Speak Out: No to politicking By EDGARDO LUCERO Argao, Cebu
It is very unfortunate that the noble vision of Cebu Gov. Pablo Garcia of deputizing local officials to reinforce the fight against the drug menace has been given political color by his detractors who accused him of “wasting money for a political vehicle to form a power base in the barangays.”
Can’t public officials, especially those in the executive branch of government, exercise their options without being accused of politicking? Ironically, these people who point an accusing finger are the same ones who are politicking, aren’t they?
It cannot be denied that the drug menace has already affected the most remote barangays and has victimized the innocent and vulnerable youth sector of society, which, as we all acknowledge and recognize, is the hope of the nation.
The governor’s approach of offering monetary incentives shows his earnest desire to minimize and contain, if not curb, this evil called illegal drugs.
Well, it can also be viewed as an expression of dismay over the failure of authorities to solve the social problem or a move bordering on desperation over the brazen acts of drug traffickers to thumb their noses at law enforcers.
However, to see it as, according to his political critics, a political vehicle is farthest from the truth.
Whatever and however political critics want to view this move of the governor, let them have their fill. For as long as this action will help attain the objective of fighting the drug problem is the important thing to consider. |
