Springdale kids push aside rivals

SPRINGDALE continued to dominate of the age-group categories after three of its teams ruled their respective brackets in the Under-7 and Under-8 divisions of the 2003 Aboitiz Cup football tournament with wins Saturday at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits field.

The four-a-side U-7 action saw Springdale Team 1 and Team 2 clutch the No.1 spots of group A and B, respectively, after staying undefeated in four games apiece.

Springdale 1 dumped rival Don Bosco Technical School 1, 6-0, to reap a 4-0 win-loss slate as Sean Low led the team with goals in the third and eighth minutes.

Chaco Sy, John Modina and Lorenzo Ceniza added goals in the third, sixth and ninth minutes to hoist the Mario Ceniza-coached Springdale to a 5-0 lead at halftime. Antonio Rafols drained the game’s last goal.

Meanwhile, Springdale 2 reined in SHS-J 2, 4-1, after a tough 1-1 first half to log three wins and a draw. Jose Maria Navarro gave SHS-J the lead after scoring in the opening minute, but Springdale’s Lorenzo Ugarte took the helm in scoring in the third to force a 1-all deadlock.

Ugarte again fired in the 11th to take the lead as Pericles Dakay and Ace Gocuan added fire power in the 14th and 16th.

DBTC 3 is at the No.2 spot in group A, while DBTC 2 is also at the No.2 spot of group B – both with three wins in three games. DBTC 3 scored a huge 14-0 thumping of Springdale 5, as DBTC 2 exacted revenge for its sister teams when it thrashed Springdale 4, 10-0.

In the six-a-side U-8 battle, Springdale 1 has nine points with three consecutive wins to top bracket B, while DBTC 2 won by default over Batang Rotary-Punta Prin-cesa to nab six points and claim the pole post in group A with two wins and one loss.

On the other hand, City Central School-Excellence Motors ripped DBTC 1, 3-1, even with only four players, while DBTC 5 nipped sister team DBTC 3, 1-0, and Springdale 2 cuffed Cebu International School, 2-0.
