Bridge managers ask: Write off P1.5M power bills of new bridge By Charmaine Y. Rodriguez
THE Mactan-Cebu Bridge Management Committee (MCBMC) agreed yesterday to ask the Regional Development Council (RDC) to pass a resolution asking two power firms to write off the overdue bills of the Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge.
During the MCBMC’s 12th regular meeting yesterday, engineer Adelaida Paylado of the DPWH 7 informed the body that they still need to pay the Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) and the Mactan Electric Co. (Meco) over P1.539 million in arrears from July 2002 to August 2003.
Paylado informed the body that Veco already denied their request while Meco did not reply.
However, MCBMC vice chairman Pericles Dakay, who presided over the meeting, said they will take up the matter during RDC’s full council meeting on Oct.26.
The body also agreed to remind the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu, as well as the Provincial Government and the municipality of Cordova on MCBMC’s request for the local government units (LGUs) to contribute P400,000 each for the bridge’s upkeep.
Dakay suggested that they make “formal and informal” follow-ups so they will be granted their request.
Cebu City Councilor Gabriel Leyson, who attended the meeting, said the appropriation will be included in the City’s next supplemental budget.
The bridge committee also passed a resolution asking Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district) to appropriate funds for the fencing of the center island of the bridge’s approaches.
Paylado said Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) estimates the work to cost P691,000.
Dakay said the project has a “dual” purpose: to protect both pedestrians and the plants there.
The body also presented yesterday the proposed addendum to the committee’s memorandum of agreement with Airfreight 2100 or FedEx, which is donating P90,000 monthly to help pay the electric bills of the bridge.
It was agreed that the company’s donation could be used for other expenses such as improvements for security and for beautification.
Allan Soco of Airfreight 2100 said the proposal was referred to the company’s chairman and president for approval.
