Micame: Tedman strict in implementing towing ordinance
By Rel P. Micame

KUDOS. Congratulations to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7 under the leadership of Director Reynaldo Esmeralda for solving the ambush-murder of Cebu customs deputy collector Eduardo “Wewe” Lao and his colleague, customs appraiser Bennet Soreño, at Osmeña Blvd. and R. R. Landon St., Cebu City last July 24.

After almost two months of sleuthing, Esmeralda arrested two suspects, Juan Jesus “John” Vergel de Dios, 31 of Lagtang, Talisay City and Rustico “Loloy” Fernandez, 37, of Maasin City. During interrogation, De Dios mentioned customs examiner Arnold Famor as the one who hired him when they met at Plaza Independencia with Fernandez two days before the July 24 ambush. Esmeralda had asked Customs District Collector Billy Bibit to let Famor come to the NBI office for questioning, The customs examiner did not report back to his office after lunch the other day.

De Dios was arrested by Esmeralda when the former appeared last Tuesday afternoon, at the NBI headquarters for questioning about the Lao-Soreño ambush- murder. He was accompanied by Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) chief Felix Espino. Fernandez was arrested earlier at the Palace of Justice when he appeared at the City Prosecutor’s Office on charges filed against him for the disappearance of two container vans containing smuggled rice at the Cebu International Port (CIP). Both De Dios and Fernandez work at the CIIS, the former as Espino’s personal driver, while the latter is also a driver and errand boy.

The NBI 7 has still to question a Chinese businessman who was reportedly with Famor at Club Harem in Mandaue City two days before the ambush.

NBI investigators believe the disappearance of the two container vans led to the final solution of the murder of the two customs officials.

TOWING COMPLAINTS. Several complaints from motorists have reached this corner that Mandaue City’s traffic enforcers are very strict in implementing the towing ordinance. A friend, an owner of a pick-up from Tayud, Liloan related to me his experience with Tedman enforcers a few weeks ago. He said that when he was on his way home after dropping his daughter at Inmaculada Mandaue, his pick-up broke down near the City sports center at the Mandaue reclamation area. He left his vehicle along the roadside to fetch his mechanic who lives in Umapad. But when he came back with the mechanic, his pick-up was no longer on the roadside. He learned from people in the vicinity that his pick-up was towed to the Tedman’s garage. After paying the towing charges, the mechanic fixed the defective part of his vehicle. He left cursing the traffic enforcers.

ANOTHER EXPERIENCE. My friend also related to me his cousin’s experience with Tedman enforcers. My friend said that his cousin, who drives a multicab had a flat tire in Mandaue City. Under the heat of the sun, his cousin had to change the tire. Just when he was through loading his jack, tire wrench and the flat tire at the baggage compartment, a towing truck parked beside his vehicle.

“Unsa man guyoron ninyo ang akong sakyanan,” (Are you going to tow my car) his cousin asked, unsheathing a sharp bolo he borrowed from a neighbor to slaughter a chicken earlier that morning.

Scared of the sharp bolo, although not threatened by his cousin, the traffic enforcer who escorted the towing truck asked, “Nahuman nag ilis ang ligid? Hala larga.”(Are you through changing the tire? Okay go.)

City Mayor Thadeo Ouano should advise his traffic enforcers to be more considerate to motorists. Not all vehicles are always in good condition and have tubeless tires.

BLOOD-LETTING. The Rotary Club of Consolacion, in cooperation with the Municipal Health Office, will conduct a blood-letting activity at the Knights of Columbus social hall today.

Club president Oliver Cruz disclosed that the whole day activity will start at 8:30 this morning.

SCRIPTURE READING. Suggested reading of the Holy Bible for today is found in the Gospel according to St. Luke 8:1-3 “Woman who accompanied Jesus,” and for Sept. 20—St. Luke 8:4-15 “The parable of the sower.”
