No more cops spotted in bars, says Roderos
By Lorenzo P. Niñal

RECENT visits by a special police team to various nightspots in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue made the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 say that the bar ban is working.

The team “found no policemen” inside the dozen or so KTV bars and girlie joints that it visited the past days, PRO 7 Chief of Staff Ronald Roderos said.

If policemen still visit bars purely for pleasure, as some unverified reports are saying, these have not reached the attention of police officials, Roderos said.

Roderos urged the public to tip off the PRO 7 for any presence of policemen in bars. He also vowed to conduct more surprise inspections in these nightspots and gambling holes.

Urgency

The ban, which the PNP is implementing for some time now, takes on renewed urgency with the recent proposal to include in the directive all government officials, and with Malacañang’s order for a lifestyle check.

In implementing the bar ban, Roderos said, a base police team the PRO 7 headquarters is usually assisted by an intelligence operative and a policeman from the area of operation.

How it’s done

The intelligence man enters the bar while another policeman talks to the management. The rest of the team waits outside for the signal to join their companions inside if there’s going to be an arrest.

A policeman found inside is asked to present documents to prove that he is there on official business (like surveillance) and other papers authorizing him to carry a gun (if he has one with him.)

On surveillance

If he is on surveillance for illegal drug activities, he has to show a pre-operation report signed by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the region.

If he is there to follow up a case, he needs to present papers signed by his immediate superior saying so.

A policeman who can’t prove the legitimacy of his presence inside the bar will have to face administrative sanctions, or a criminal case for his gun.
