Milo run hits record field
By Rommel C. Manlosa

THE 27th National Milo Marathon-Cebu leg, set to blast off this Sunday at the Ayala Business Park, has attracted a record-breaking participation, making last year’s 2,305 participants a pale comparison.

According to tournament organizer Joe Deresas, nearly 11,000 runners have signed up, the largest in all qualifying races of the country’s longest-running footrace.

“This is the product of pure hard work. After last year’s race, I only rested for two months then I started working for the promotion of the race,” Deresas said at the Scoop-Cebu weekly forum yesterday at Baseline Restaurant.

Pat Goc-ong of Ace promotions confirmed that Cebu’s attendance has surpassed Cagayan de Oro’s 9,330 participants, the current record.

Deresas explained they gathered a huge participation in the five-kilometer Men’s division race, which registered more than 6,000 entries followed by the distaff side, which listed more than 3,000 runners.

The Men’s Open competition gathered more than 100 entries, while the distaff side had 18 as of yesterday’s listings. The Open race is a 20-kilometer run, which starts and finishes at the Sumilon Road of the Ayala Business Park.

“We transferred the start and finish line to Ayala because we can’t accommodate 11,000 runners on our usual venue in front of the Cebu City Capitol,” Deresas said.

Aside from the 20km open race and the 5km fun run there will also a 3km Kiddie Run for boys and girls, which will also give away cash prizes and trophies.

Last year’s Men’s Open ruler Joseph Penales of Bohol and Women’s Open champion Christy Sevillano of the University of Cebu will have a tough time defending the title against a tougher and bigger field.
