Organizers mull bigger, better int’l. hoops tilt By Rommel C. Manlosa
AFTER the overwhelming success of the 2003 Trust Classic Open Championship, which ended Wednesday night, organizers pledged to make it an annual and even bigger event.
Recognizing the potential of the tournament, the Cebu City Government and the Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau (CVCB) said they are willingness to support the event, which they say is one way of attracting tourists to Cebu.
Seeing a huge crowd during the six-day cagefest, CVCB chairman and Waterfront Philippines president Patrick Gregorio promised full backing of next year’s edition.
“Definitely, there will be another tournament next year,” Gregorio told said.
Gregorio is planning to include an international open in the calendar of the CVCB, which is actively promoting sports tourism in the region.
“We will call it Queen City International Cup, which could be patterned after the Jones Cup of Taiwan,” said Gregorio. “We will try to invite more teams – powerhouse teams like South Korea, China, Kazakstan and other European teams. This will be good for the Cebuanos and for the sport as well.”
Meanwhile, after his M. Lhuillier-Kwarta Padala-Cebu proved their worth by winning the title against the taller Qatar National Team, team manager Michael Lhuillier wants to organize a similar tournament before the end of the year.
He added that M. Lhuillier will still join and go all out for another international crown.
“It’s going to be a wonderful show if we could have one more tournament of the same kind probably by December,” said Lhuillier. “People love to watch these kind of games and we are proud to be part in all this.”
Qatar NT will probably be back to exact vengeance against M. Lhuillier-Cebu, while the Chinese-Taipei National squad will be preparing for a better performance.
