Finance chief to open ABA meeting
FINANCE Secretary Jose Isidro Camacho will be the guest of honor during the opening ceremonies of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA) 20th General Meeting on Oct. 7 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium of the RCBC Plaza in Makati City.
Secretary Camacho will give the inaugural address before 150 top bankers and financial leaders from Asia, according to a statement.
ABA, the biggest group of banks and financial institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, is chaired by Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco, honorary chairman of Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC).
The theme for this year’s ABA general meeting is “Challenges and Competition in a Globalized Market.”
The topics of the seminars are focused on helping Asian banks meet the challenges of increased competition in terms of sounder risk management, better corporate governance and comprehensive strategies in response to global competition. The speakers are recognized international experts and practitioners on these issues.
The first session, “Risk Management,” will be handled by Ken McLay, managing director of Risk Solutions. McLay is a chartered accountant and has been with Standard & Poor’s since 1992 starting with the Financial Services Group and then the Risk Solutions group in 2001. The Risk Solutions Group provides powerful credit risk management tools and consulting services to assist customers in managing their credit risk.
The second session, “Corporate Governance in Banking,” will have as speaker Tan Sri Mohamed Basir bin Ahmad, chairman of Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank), the largest banking group in Malaysia.
He is also a member of the board of directors of Visa International Asia-Pacific Region, the vice president of the executive committee of the Malaysia-Japan Economic Association and chairman of the Malaysia-Philippines Business Council.
“Globalization and Asian Banking Competitiveness” will be tackled by Dr. David K.P. Li, chairman and chief executive of The Bank of East Asia.
Li is a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and serves on the international advisory boards of the Capital Magazine, Carlos P. Romulo Foundation for Peace and Development International Board of Advisers, Daimler-Chrysler and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York International Advisory Committee.
